ALBANY — Dougherty County officials on Thursday celebrated the completion of a resurfacing project in the Radium Springs area that included work on three streets.

The project, which included the reconstruction of Skywater Boulevard, Azalea Boulevard and part of Camella Road, was paid for with a $500,000 grant from the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank. Additional funds came from special-purpose local-option sales tax (SPLOST).

The work was part of the county’s storm recovery efforts.

“SRTA (State Road and Tollway Authority) is excited to see the completion of the Rebuilding Radium Springs project,” SRTA Executive Director Chris Tomlinson said. “We are proud to partner with Dougherty County to provide an important funding source that was used not only to rebuild the infrastructure, but provide additional features that meet community needs even better than before.”

The resurfacing project was earmarked to improve safety, reduce wear and tear caused by potholes, as well as repair damaged and eroded portions of the roadway. The project reconstructed the existing, storm-damaged roadway with a 31-foot-wide curb and gutter road for approximately one mile through a residential area. It covered approximately 6,000 feet of roadway, which included Azalea and Skywater Boulevards. A complete street, including bike lanes and sidewalks, was also built as part of the project.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank on this project,” Dougherty County Commission Chairman Chris Cohilas said. “This grant has allowed us to renovate road damage from the (January 2017) storms, and with the addition of bike lanes and sidewalks to the community, it will greatly enhance the quality of life for residents in the Radium Springs area.”

County officials held a ribbon-cutting for the project at the site on Thursday.
