AMERICUS — Sumter County Sheriff Eric D. Bryant said rumors of a possible school shooting led to the lockdown of Sumter County Middle School here Tuesday.

A release from Bryant’s office said that, at approximately 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to a possible shooting that might take place at the middle school. This information was received through word of mouth from student to student.

Protocol was implemented, and the school was placed on lockdown while deputies and school resource officers spoke with the students allegedly involved. The entire building was searched.

No viable threats or firearms were discovered during the search, but Bryant said the investigation is ongoing. Once officials determined that there is no danger to students, normal operations resumed.

Bryant reminded citizens that prank calls or calls to get attention will not be tolerated by his office. Individuals found liable of such action will be held accountable through the due process of the law.
