ALBANY — The Merry Acres girls and the Americus-Sumter boys took the top team honors Thursday at the Deep South Conference middle school track and field championships, but one of the rising stars of the Albany-area track scene became quite obvious.

Albany Middle School’s boys team finished second to Americus-Sumter with the team total, but Albany Middle School’s Terry Roscoe was the fastest man on the track Thursday. Roscoe won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes for the Indians and also ran the final leg of the 400- and 1600-meter relays, which the Indians won as well. He won the 100-meter with a time of 11.70 and the 200-meter with a time of 23:62. He teamed with Jamar White, Zion Johnson and Melvin Williams to win the 4×100, then teamed with Kendarious Hudson, Melvin Williams and Justin Moore to win the 4×400.

The Indians put together 136.50 points as a team, second to Americus-Sumter, which scored 149. Albany Middle’s other first-place finishes included Melvin Williams in the 400-meter dash and the boy’s triple jump.

Other local winners included Mikhail Simmons of Merry Acres, who won the 75-meter hurdles, Amicah Sanders of Radium Springs, who won the high jump, and Jermaine Powell of Merry Acres, who won the shot put.

The Merry Acres girls finished with 151 points, ahead of second-place Crisp County, which scored 107. Merry Acres took first and second place in the girl’s 800-meter run with Amarise Idlett in first and Malieah Benton in second. Idlett and Benton were also a part of the 1600-meter relay team that took first place with teammates Jordan Haley and Niari Snead.  Snead also won the girl’s triple jump. Gabrielle Brown and Lauren Edwards finished 1-2 in the girl’s shot put for Merry Acres, and Janiyah Winslow won the discus throw.

The only other local girl who took first place in events was Reginae Hill of Albany Middle, who won the 75-meter hurdles and the girl’s long jump.
