ALBANY — Just about every member of the Albany State Golden Rams football team saw action on the playing field Saturday afternoon as the Rams blew out Central State University (OH) 48-0. The Golden Rams (4-0) have now won four straight and remain undefeated in the SIAC.

ASU quarterback Dionte Bonneau completed 11 of 20 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns to lead the passing game. Freshman running back Frederick Gaines led the rushing attack with 15 carries for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Ten different runners picked up rushing yards for the Golden Rams.

Ralph Lovett III led the receivers with four catches for 52 yards but Marlon Pollick and Devon Dorsey caught the two touchdown passes.

Kicker Eli Mashburn booted a 29-yard field goal for ASU’s first points, then kicked a 30-yard field goal in the second quarter. He missed a fourth-quarter field goal attempt.

Albany State’s “Dirty Blue” defense held Central State to just 121 yards of offense all day. Former Lee County star Eric Price was one of three Golden Rams to intercept passes Saturday. Jakobe Heggs and Aaron Newton also pulled down interceptions. Marlon Pollock and Jalen Pugh each recovered fumbles for the Rams. Jaree Turner led the defense with seven tackles.

During pre-game, Coach “Hamp” Smith was honored with a moment of silence. At halftime, the Golden Rams honored Coach Smith with a balloon release at midfield. Approximately, 100 former players of Coach “Hamp” Smith were in attendance. For the remainder of the football season, the Golden Rams players will wear (HS) decals on their helmets in honor of Coach “Hamp” Smith.

Albany State will celebrate homecoming next Saturday when Allen University comes to Albany. Kick-off is planned for 2 p.m.
