Basketball Shorts: Albany Monroe sweeps Thomasville, Dougherty sweeps Crisp Co.

THOMASVILLE — The Monroe basketball teams breezed to big wins in Thomasville Friday night as the region competitions began.

The Golden Tornadoes blasted Thomasville 74-45 while the Lady Nadas whipped the Lady Bulldogs 62-35.

Monroe (10-2) senior Justin Burns poured in 16 second-quarter points on his way to a game-high 27 points as the Tornadoes pulled away from the Bulldogs.

Taylor McKinzy swished six threes and scored a total of 23 points to lead the Monroe girls (7-6). KJ Acree knocked down 18 points, doled 13 assists, and took six steals while Ciarra Lunsford put in 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Monroe will host Crisp County Tuesday night and then host cross-town and region rival Dougherty Friday night in a clash of two of the state’s highest ranked teams in Class AAA.

Dougherty sweeps two in CordeleCORDELE — The Dougherty Trojan basketball teams won big Friday night as they opened their region slate against the Crisp County Cougars. The Lady Trojans breezed to a 60-22 win and the boys followed with a 75-60 win.

The Lady Trojans (8-6) built a 30-6 halftime lead and were never in danger. Jatiana Chambers led the way with 16 points and six assists, Amiyah Jackson followed with 10 points and Jaliya Burns added nine.

Juwuan Jinks, Jr. led the Trojans with 15 points while Jai’on Burns and Markelle Jones each put in 13 for Dougherty. Crisp County’s LaDavius Smith poured in 25 to lead the Cougars while Jaylon Cooper scored 14 and Smoke Dwight added 11.

Dougherty will host Columbus Tuesday night and then go across town to take on Monroe Friday night.

Sherwood Christian 75, Westwood 37CAMILLA — The Sherwood Christian Eagles improved their record to 5-7 Friday night with a 75-37 win over the Westwood Wildcats.

Senior Alex Harris scored 25 points to lead the Eagles, while Tripp Roberts scored 15 points, pulled down eight rebounds and blocked three shots. JP Cannon drilled four three-pointers and finished with 14 points for the Eagles.

Sherwood Christian will host Schley County next Friday night in Albany.

Calhoun Co. 59, Randolph-Clay 39CUTHBERT — The No. 4-ranked Calhoun County Cougars (9-3) moved their region record to 6-0 with a 59-39 win over Randolph-Clay in Cuthbert.

Darnell Enocher lit up the scoreboard with 26 points to lead the Cougars and Ricardo Cannon added 12 points for the winners.

The Cougars will play at Terrell County Tuesday night and at Miller County Friday night.

Westover 54, Bainbridge 47ALBANY — The Westover Patriots opened their region slate Friday night with a 54-47 win over the Bainbridge Bearcats. The win improves the Westover record to 5-7 on the year.

Senior Traevion Wheeler put in 18 points, pulled down eight rebounds and blocked four shots to lead Westover. Jalen Holmes scored 13 points and handed out three assists. Anthony Milton added seven points and five assists while Gregory Williams scored seven and grabbed four rebounds. Jacob Ross added six points and three assists.

The Patriots are scheduled to play at Hardaway in Columbus Tuesday, then host Cairo Friday night in Albany.

Calhoun Co. 91, Wilkinson Co. 42EDISON — The Calhoun County Cougars (10-3) breezed to a big win, 91-42, over Wilkinson County (1-11) Saturday night in Edison.

Zechariah Canidate led the Cougars with 18 points, while Jadon Welch and Zion Suber each scored 15 points.

Myles Cobb scored 12 to lead Wilkinson County.
