ALBANY – The Cairo Syrupmakers scored 20 runs in the final two innings of Thursday’s doubleheader against the Westover Patriots (4-12, 0-6) and swept both games Albany State East, 26-8 and 12-2 in Region 1-AAAA play.

The Syrupmakers (10-5, 5-0) were up 6-2 before scoring eight runs in the sixth inning, and looked as though the game would end early. However, the Patriots had different plans and put six runs of their own on the board in the bottom of the sixth.

Westover’s Jaxon Reese had the big hit in the inning – a bases-loaded single that scored Kenton Quimby and Amaree Thompson. The Patriots chased two Syrupmaker pitchers off the mound before Cairo’s Cannon Maige shutdown the Patriots with two strikeouts.

Things went haywire for the Patriots in the seventh, however. Cairo scored 12 runs in the seventh with just two doubles. Eight Syrupmakers walked in the inning, pitches hit two, and one got on with an error.

Things continued to go Cairo’s way in the second game. The Syrupmakers built a 7-1 lead after three innings and closed it out with three in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Westover’s Dominique Ball took the loss on the mound. He pitched six innings and allowed seven hits and eight runs – only two of which were earned. He walked six and struck out five. Aden Reese pitched the seventh for the Patriots.

Westover managed just four hits in game two and centerfield Jaylan McLloyd had two of those hits. One of his hits was an RBI triple.

Westover is scheduled to play at Hardaway in Columbus Tuesday for a single game, then host Hardaway Thursday here in Albany for a doubleheader.

Westover’s Dominque Ball (in white) sneaks across home plate for a Patriot run as the ball gets away from Cairo’s catcher in the sixth inning. The Patriots pushed six runs across in the bottom of the sixth, but the Syrupmakers added 12 more runs in the seventh to win big.
