Calhoun County showed up and showed out in Wednesday night’s Region 1-A tournament games. The top-ranked and undefeated Cougars (26-0)raced past Seminole County 75-43 and the Lady Cougars blasted Seminole County 57-17.
The Cougars started out slow and led only 4-2 with four minutes of the clock gone. Then Bryan Smith hit back to back threes for the Cougars before Coach Marcus Shaw pulled his starters. The new group of Cougars added more intensity and speed and started outrunning the Indians each time. In the second quarter, the Cougars scored the first 13 points to pull out to a 31-10 lead and the game was never in doubt again. The Cougars led 39-14 at the half and massacred the Indians in the third quarter, leading 66-28 after three. The Indians simply had no answer for the Cougar’s speed and strong pressure defense. Fortunately, officials shortened the final period and Shaw let his bench clear out and run the floor.
Bryan Smith led four Cougars in double figures with 13, TyKerious Curry and Edwin Wims each added 12, and Jamad Wiley contributed 11. Calhoun County is off Thursday and will play in the semifinals Friday against the winner of Miller County versus Chattahoochee County Thursday at 5:30.
The girls game was somewhat competitive in the first half as the Lady Cougars held only a 31-14 lead. But in the third quarter, the lady Cougars turned up the pressure to another level and created turnover after turnover with full-court pressure. They held the Lady Indians scoreless in the third quarter while Calhoun poured in 22 points to lead 53-14 after the third quarter.
Kanashus Enocher scored 18 points for the Lady Cougars and Takia Davis added 13 to lead Calhoun.
The win moves the #4 ranked Lady Cougars to 24-2 overall. They now wait to see who they will play in the semifinal round Friday. Pelham and Quitman County battle Thursday to see who will play the Lady Cougars.
