ALBANY – The Deerfield-Windsor Knights shut down the Terrell Academy Eagles Friday night at Webb Memorial Stadium on the DWS campus for a 21-0 region win and Albany-area bragging rights. The win improves the Deerfield-Windsor record to 4-1 on the season while the Eagles drop to 3-2.

“They put us through the meat grinder with their running game. Our kids bent but did not break,” said Deerfield-Windsor Head Coach Jake McCrae.

The Knights overcame penalties and made key third and fourth down conversions in the first half to build a 14-0 halftime lead with a touchdown pass to David Hutchins and a short touchdown run from Cole Jones.

The penalties stalled other Deerfield-Windsor drives and helped the Eagles move into Knight territory in the second half.

“That’s one of the things we have got to clean up,” McCrae said. “We do a lot of lateral running and sometimes we get ahead of ourselves. We have to work on several little things like penalties and the way we line up on defense in the coming weeks. If we can do that, it will have a big payoff.”

The Terrell Academy offense tried to get the Eagles back into the game in the second half with multiple fourth-down conversions. The Eagles got key runs from Bryson Peachey, Ty Thomas, and Dylan Hardin to move into Knight territory.

The Knight defense knew that it would be one of those three Eagles carrying the ball so late in the game, the Eagles tried something different. Peachey tossed the ball to Hardin went to the right and lofted a halfback pass down the field.  Deerfield-Windsor’s Boyd Pollock was there to pick off the pass and return the interception to the 30-yard line.

Not only did the interception end Terrell Academy’s hopes of scoring, it set up the final Deerfield-Windsor touchdown.

On the first play after the interception, Jones raced around the left side to the eight-yard line then scored on the next play as he busted his way through the middle of the Eagle defense. Benson Bridges booted the extra point for the 21-0 final.

Deerfield-Windsor quarterback Lane Sceals completed his first 11 passes of the night and finished with 17 of 23 with 200 yards and a touchdown. He did not throw any interceptions. Jones led the rushing attack for the Knights with 123 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Gabe Daniel caught five passes for 108 yards to lead the receivers.

The Knights will host Baconton Charter Friday night at DWS for a non-region match up while Terrell Academy will host Southland Academy in Dawson.
