Joi Hubbard wins state triple jump, relay team sets school record

COLUMBUS — Deerfield-Windsor senior Joi Hubbard won an individual state championship and the girls’ 3200-meter relay team set a school record. Still, the local teams did not finish as high as they had hoped this weekend at the state track and field championships at Brookstone School in Columbus.

Hubbard took the top spot in the girls’ triple jump just after she finished second in the girls’ long jump when her last and strongest jump of the day was ruled a scratch. Hubbard’s jump of 36 feet, 7 ¼ inches put her in front of Stratford’s Kelly Grace Perrin. Perrin won the long jump at 17 foot, 7 ½ inches. Hubbard’s best-recorded jump was 17 feet, 4 ½ inches. Hubbard also took third place in the girls’ 100-meter dash.

“The boys were a little snake-bitten by injuries, but we had some strong individual performances despite that,” Deerfield-Windsor head coach Jake Clawson said. “On the girl’s side, I was really proud of Joi for getting her first state title, and our 4x800m relay finished in fourth and set a new school record.”

The boys finished seventh overall in the state with Bethlehem Christian taking the title. The girls placed sixth with host Brookstone on top.

Those scoring points for Deerfield-Windsor in addition to Hubbard’s already mentioned points included:

• Benson Bridges, fourth place in pole vault

• Liam Elliot, third place in discus throw

• Ellie Jane Wright and Ella Bridges, tie for fifth place in pole vault

• Whatley Fountain, third place in 1600-meter run and third place in 3200-meter run

• 4×800 boys relay team, second place — Whatley Fountain, Mangham Pippin, Jackson Belusko and Garrison Slaughter

• 4×800 girls relay team, fourth place — Macy Hatcher, Kaylee Hatcher, Sophie Logan and Gabrielle Harris (new school record)

• 4×100 girls relay team, sixth place — Ellie Jane Wright, Sarai Robertson, Murphy Ray and Joi Hubbard

• Garrison Slaughter, fifth place, 800-meter run
