Lee County, Albany athletes shine at track and field sectionals

ALBANY – The Class AAA and AAAA state track meets are scheduled to take place at Hugh Mills Stadium beginning Thursday but area athletes spent Saturday at sectionals with competitions held throughout the state.

Lee County sent a contingent of athletes to Atlanta to compete in Class 6A and the Atlanta area schools dominated the top results except for Lee County’s Sarah Head and Corey McDowell.

Head won the girl’s 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, and the 300-meter hurdles. She also finished second in the 100-meter dash.  McDowell finished second in the 300-meter hurdles, sixth in the boy’s triple jump, and ninth in the 110-meter hurdles.

Several Monroe and Dougherty athletes shined in the AAA sectionals in Ft. Valley, including defending state champion Marianna Wright.

Wright won the 300-meter hurdles and the 800-meter run, her first win in this event plus helped teammates Jurdyn Johnson, Jediah Lewis and Kaitlyn Williams win the 800-meter relay and the 1600-meter relay.

Johnson won the girl’s 400-meter dash with freshman teammate Lewis in fifth place and Williams taking seventh. Johnson also finished third in the 800-meter run with Lewis in fourth.

Also, Monroe’s Ricoria Winchester finished second in the 100-meter hurdles

For the boys in Ft. Valley, Dougherty’s Austin Davis took third place in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Monroe’s Usir Bey placed second in the 400-meter dash while Justin Burns took fourth. Sedrick Roundtree took third place in the 800-meter dash and Jimmy Johnson finished third in the 300-meter hurdles. 

Burns, the defending state champion in the high jump, finished second in that event Saturday and Dougherty’s Jaquavus Hallman took third in the triple jump and seventh in the long jump.

The Dougherty 400-meter relay team finished third while Monroe’s 1600-meter relay took first while Dougherty took third. Monroe also took third in the 800-meter relay.

Westover’s Sydney Donaldson won the girl’s high jump at the AAAA sectionals in Milledgeville and Nine Daniels finished third in the girl’s triple jump. Madison Mitchell took fifth in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes.  The 800-meter relay team of Donaldson, Mitchell, Daniels, and Alex Marcus finished second, three seconds behind Druid Hills.

Westover’s boys were led by Jaylan McLeod who took third in the 400-meter dash, fourth in the long jump and helped the 800-meter relay team finish fourth.
