ALBANY — Led by seniors Braden Moore and Kam Sanders, the No. 5-ranked Lee County Trojans powered past a short-handed Monroe team 65-49 in a preseason scrimmage Wednesday night at Monroe High School. Monroe’s girls took the opening game with a 48-32 victory.

The Golden Tornadoes were missing several seniors still focused on Monroe’s football playoffs, including Chase Dixon, Lorenzo Still, James Adams, and Nehemiah Tinch. Ousmane Kromah also sat out for the Trojans.

The teams were tied 13-13 at the end of the first quarter, but Lee County began to pull away after former Westover guard Braylen Ball drained a three-pointer, followed by an inside basket from Sanders. Sanders then hit another three-pointer to put the Trojans up 28-19, and their lead continued to grow throughout the game.

“We looked like it was the first game,” Lee County head coach Kirven Davis said. “We got a chance to play some young kids to try and build depth. Improvements are around the corner.”

In the girls’ game, Lee County stayed close early against the Lady Tornadoes, trailing only 12-10 after the first quarter. However, Monroe picked up the pace and surged to a 27-13 lead at halftime, powered by sophomores Kie’Aundria Acree and Taylor Mckinzy.

The Lady Trojans added a full-court press in the second half, creating some turnovers, and the teams played evenly for the final two quarters.

“We were jittery,” said Monroe head coach Jennifer Acree. “We are young. We just need to play. KJ (Acree) and Taylor (Mckinzy) will lead the way and the others will come along nicely. Prayerfully, by region play, we will be playing some great ball.”

Lee County will face Dougherty on Saturday, Nov. 16. Monroe will host Bible Baptist Christian of Statesboro on Friday, Nov. 15, and Putnam County on Nov. 16.
