LEESBURG — The Lee County Lady Trojans are heading into the state playoffs Wednesday as the number three seed from Region 1 with a 19-11 record that includes a four-game winning streak that put Lee County into the third seed. That four-game streak began at the expense of Tift County where the Lady Trojans won 3-0 and 5-2 to move into third place. Now the Lady Trojans will face North Atlanta (23-6), the top team in Region 4, at Alcovy High School in Covington.
That is a huge improvement over last season’s 10-19 record with no trip to the state playoffs, which was a first for the Lady Trojan softball team.
“Out of the four-game win streak,” said head coach Dwayne Suggs, “we found that our kids can play when there is a lot at stake. We won 2 crucial games at Tift to propel us into the 3 seed. We won’t ask them to do any more than what they have been doing. Besides sharing our scouting reports on the other teams, we will simply ask them to give 100 percent and continue to play the game as we have been doing, which has gotten us to this point. We will obviously see some good pitching, maybe one of the best catchers in the state, and some gritty players from teams in this Super Regional. Regular and region season is over. Postseason is a new season. We will see how far our progress can carry us.”
The Lady Trojans are led at the plate by senior first baseman Emmalee Freeman with a .407 batting average and a .533 on-base percentage. Senior pitcher Sarah Musgrove leads with runs knocked in at 45 which includes a team-high six home runs to go with her .360 average. Center Fielder Kenndy Patrick and shortstop Reagan Watkins have also stepped up at the plate with .402 and .381 batting averages, respectively. Patrick leads the team in runs scored with 38 and stolen bases with 11.
The super-regional format is a double-elimination format. The two winners will face off in game two and the two losers will battle for survival in the loser’s bracket. Alcovy (17-12) takes on Lakeside (17-13) in the other opening-round game.
