LEESBURG — The biggest game of the year so far is on tap Friday night for the No. 4-ranked Lee County Trojans who travel to Thomasville to face defending region champion and No. 2-ranked Thomas County Central in a game that will determine the Region 1-AAAAAA championship.
“We are excited to be in another big-time game like this,” said Lee County head coach Dean Fabrizio. “You have two of the top four ranked teams in the state playing for a region championship. It’s going to be a great atmosphere and a lot of fun Friday night.”
The winner of Friday night’s game will have the home-field advantage for the first two rounds of the state playoffs plus have the opportunity to keep home-field advantage throughout the playoffs by winning a coin toss against other region champions.
The Trojans (7-1) have scored 56 points in each of the last two region games and are averaging 44 points a game on the season. They are tied offensively to an effective running game led by the nation’s number four high school running back for the Class of 2025 — Ousmane Kromah. Kromah has amassed 1124 yards rushing and is the top ground gainer in the state in Class 6A. He also scored 13 rushing touchdowns and caught 19 passes for 374 yards and another six touchdowns. The Trojans, however, have much more than just Kromah. Quarterback Weston Bryan is a growing threat both from a passing and running perspective and senior Devin Collier and Braxton Honer are explosive when handed the football.
Thomas County Central, however, has recorded four shout-out wins and has not allowed more than 19 points in any game this season. They shut down Houston County and four-star quarterback Antwann Hill Saturday and beat the No. 7-ranked Bears 27-0.
“Thomas County Central has a really good team, as you would expect from a team ranked No. 2 in the state,” Fabrizio said. “They are long and fast on defense. Offensively, they have good running backs, a big athletic tight end, a strong offensive line, and a good passing game. We have to do a great job of being efficient on offense and taking advantage of opportunities.”
The Yellow Jackets clinched the region championship last year in Leesburg with a 39-30 win and lost in the state semifinals to Roswell.
Game time Friday in Thomasville is set for 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and fans can buy tickets online here: https://gofan.co/ event/1086498?schoolId= GA24305
