Sherwood Christian volleyball knocks off Thomas County Central

ALBANY – The Sherwood Christian Lady Eagles opened their volleyball season with a hard-fought victory over Thomas County Central on Tuesday evening, winning in five sets at Sherwood Christian Academy.
“We had a tough season opener,” said SCA Coach Briana Collins. “Once we shook off the first-set jitters, we locked in and fought hard. I was so proud to see many of the things we focused on during the summer come to life on the court. One of our strengths is holding down the service line, and we did that well with critical runs from Kennedy Morton and Addie Hemmings throughout the night.”
Thomas County Central started strong, jumping out to a big lead and easily taking the first game, 25-15. The Lady Eagles struggled to find their rhythm at the net in the opening set, but that changed in the second game. The Lady Eagles began with a 7-2 run, forcing the Lady Jackets to call a timeout. Although Thomas County Central began to close the gap, Collins subbed in Kennedy Morton to serve. With Morton at the service line, the Lady Eagles extended their lead to 16-4, and Lucy Wright’s strong serves helped close out the game, giving Sherwood a 25-8 victory.
Game three was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading leads throughout. Ariana Whitmire’s powerful serves late in the game secured a 25-21 win for Sherwood. Thomas County Central fought back in the fourth set, narrowly winning 26-24 to force a decisive fifth game. However, the Lady Eagles dominated the final set, winning 15-7.
“Senior outside hitter Alex Collins led the night with 12 kills,” Coach Collins said. “Junior libero Allie Hemmings was in complete control of the defense, collecting 22 digs. We played a more aggressive offensive game, and I plan to continue capitalizing on that as we move through the season.”
In the earlier matches, Thomas County Central won the middle school game 21-25, 25-2, 15-8, while Sherwood claimed victory in the JV match, 25-20, 25-22.
The Varsity Eagles will play at Georgia Christian in Valdosta on Thursday. The middle school and JV teams will face Lee County on Monday. Sherwood’s next home match is set for Tuesday against Grace Christian.
