South Georgia Sox win 13U Grand Slam Tourney in LaGrange

LAGRANGE — Down 4-2 heading into the fourth inning, the 13U South Georgia Sox of Leesburg scored nine runs Saturday and won the Grand Slam West Georgia Round Tripper Classic 12-4, beating the Columbus 5-Stars.

Early in the fourth inning, Kane Beard belted a three-run home run over the center field fence to put the Sox up 5-4, and the Sox added an RBI single from Rylan Carter. Garrison Lorber hit into a fielder’s choice, but an error allowed two runs to score before Matthew Giles smacked a two-run home run to close out the inning.

The Sox picked up 11 hits in all during the game. Beard and Giles knocked in four runs each.

Rhett Harrell took the win on the mound for the Sox. He pitched five innings and allowed four hits and four runs. He walked five and struck out six.

After a weekend date in Cordele this week, the South Georgia Sox now plan to compete at the Grand Slam World Series of Baseball on June 17-23 in Panama City.
