ALBANY — What a difference a year makes. A year ago, Monroe shut out Westover 20-0 in the annual June Bug Classic spring game between the two Albany schools, but Thursday night, Westover dominated the game and led 30-0 at the half.

Monroe took the opening possession and fumbled the ball away after the Tornadoes made a big first down on a pass from quarterback Jordan Washington. Westover took over and marched 60 yards down the field, mostly running the ball right through the middle of the Monroe defense.

Westover running backs Adrian Rogers and Dominque Ball carried most of the load with a couple of carries from quarterback Keyon Thomas and fullback Jordan Lasseter. Rogers scored on a two-yard run for the first Patriot touchdown with six minutes left in the first quarter, then scored on a five-yard run with just a minute to play in the quarter.

The second quarter saw the Patriots open up the offense with Thomas passing down field more frequently.

After missing Zyler Thomas down the right sideline, quarterback Keyon Thomas threw a strike to his receiver, who made a one-handed catch just inside the line for what looked like a touchdown. The play was called back for a holding penalty and that started a series of plays where penalties were called on four of the next five plays.

However, late in the half, Keyon found Zyler open for a 20-yard touchdown pass and after the two-point conversion, Westover led 22-0.

Monroe went three-and-out and left just 34 seconds on the clock in the first half when Westover got the ball again. Thomas completed another long pass that put Westover at the six-yard line and Ball ran it in on the next with just three seconds left in the half.

Four possessions in the first half and Westover scored touchdowns all four times. Westover fans have to be pleased with that performance and hopeful for the coming season.

According to MaxPreps, Westover is scheduled to open the 2024 season at home against Early County on Aug. 16. Monroe is scheduled to open in Moultrie against Colquitt County on Aug. 23.

Westover receiver Zyler Thomas (3) falls out of the end zone after making an acrobatic catch just inside the line for a 17-yard touchdown play Thursday night. The play was called back because of a holding penalty but moments later Thomas caught a 20-yard touchdown pass for the Patriots.
