ALBANY – Westover High School will have a girl’s volleyball team this fall for the first time, even though the school is still waiting on equipment to be installed. The volleyball equipment installation is scheduled for August.

“We are very excited to have a team for the first time in the school’s history and had over 100 girls sign up with interest,” said Westover principal William Chunn. “This has been a nine-year journey for me trying to get volleyball in the DCSS and at Westover High School. A special thank you to DCSS athletic director, Lea Henry and Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Dyer, for approving my request.”

Chunn said there was a plan to have a summer camp for volleyball at Westover but things did not work out. Because of the delays, Chunn is hoping the Westover girls can play a non-region schedule this year.

“Since we are new and running so far behind, we have requested to the GHSA that we play a non-region schedule for this year, Chunn said.  “It is our hope to play six or seven games this year, 2024 – 2025, with schools within our immediate area and play a full region schedule for 2025 – 2026.”

This is still a work in progress but female athletes in Dougherty County will benefit from it for many years to come,” Chunn added.
