Westover Relays produce nine ‘elite’ performances

ALBANY — The annual Westover Relays at Hugh Mills Stadium produced nine elite performances Saturday as local teams competed with other schools such as Lamar County, Bainbridge and Calvary Christian of Columbus.

Two of those elite performances came in one race — the girls’ 300-meter hurdles where Monroe’s Marianna Wright edged out Lee County’s Sarah Head. Wright finished with a time of 41;83 and Head crossed at the 42.75 mark. Wright’s time on Saturday is about a second away from the state record she set last year at Hugh Mills Stadium.

Head, a senior at Lee County, also earned an elite performance by winning the girls’ 200-meter dash with a time of 24.81

Westover freshman Sydney Donaldson put together an elite performance with a triple jump of 36.45.

Lamar County’s Makayla Watts (long jump) and Journi Harris (shot put) also earned elite performance recognition.

Dougherty’s Austin Davis finished the 100-meter dash with an elite time of 10.77 to lead the boys in elite performances. The Monroe 4×200 relay team and Lee County’s Corey McDowell (Triple Jump) were the other two elite performances.

Monroe’s Justin Burns was one leg of that 4×200 relay team that earned the elite performance recognition, and Burns also won the 400-meter dash and finished second in the 200-meter dash. Lamar County’s Caleb Laster won the 200-meter and finished second in the 100-meter dash behind Davis.

Monroe’s Sedrick Roundtree won the boy’s 800-meter run, just ahead of Dougherty’s Zaterious Griffin in second and Ridley Eidson of Lee County in third.

Deerfield-Windsor freshman Mangham Pippin took second in the boys’ 1600 run behind Banbridge’s Jahlee Sapp, while Bainbridge’s Caden Godwin won the 3200 just ahead of Lee County’s John Hoffpauir and Westover’s Stephen Herring.

In the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, Bainbridge’s Jace Weaver won both races. Lee County’s Corey McDowell finished third in both.

In the boys’ relays, Dougherty won the 400-meter relay, Monroe won the 800-meter and the 1600-meter relay, and Lee County took the 3200-meter relay.

Lamar County’s Makayla Watts won the girl’s 100-meter dash, barely edging Head and Westover’s Madison Mitchell.

Monroe’s Jurdyn Johnson won the 400-meter and 800-meter runs. Lee County took the 1600-meter run with Hadiya Ali in first place, while teammate Kali Nicholson took first in the 3200-meter run.

Monroe’s Ricoria Winchester won the girls’ 100-meter hurdles.

With the girls’ relays, Lamar County won the 400-meter relay, Westover took the 800-meter relay, Bainbridge won the 1600-meter relay and Lee County won the 3200-meter relay.
