Westover takes two from Columbus

The Westover Patriots and Lady Patriots took important region wins over visiting Columbus High School Friday night. Neither game was close as the Patriots won 66-35 and the Lady Patriots won 48-29.

Westover’s starters played well in the first half and didn’t see the floor much during the second half in the big win. Senior guard Michael Cooper scored 14 points for the Patriots, as did Antonio Jackson. Jordan Brown added 10 points, eight assists and three steals for the Patriots.

After a 0-6 start to the season, the Patriots are now 7-7 on the season and 3-3 in the region. The Blue Devils fell to 0-15 on the year and 0-8 in the region.

The Lady Patriots (12-2, 5-0) opened up the game with a 10-0 lead, but then the Westover offense slowed down and Columbus closed the gap to 12-8 at the end of the first quarter. Leading 21-12 at the half. the Lady Patriot offense didn’t really start clicking until the fourth quarter. In fact, the 48 points scored by the Lady Patriots was their lowest total of the season so far. It didn’t matter, however, because the Lady Blue Devils (5-9) could not score frequently against the Lady Patriot defense.

Senior Chastity Pickett led the Lady Patriots with 14 points, ShMyia Jones added nine and Kameron Shelley put in eight.

The Patriots travel to Americus Saturday for another region battle with the #4 ranked Americus Sumter (12-1).
